Just-in-time inventories have been portrayed as the centerpiece of the flexible production system developed by Toyota, and the key element in outperforming the mass production systems utilized in the United States. We demonstrate that just-in-time inventories--and other elements of flexible production--were pioneered by the US auto industry in the first part of the 20th century; were the key elements in making Detroit the global capital of auto production, and were abandoned by Detroit just as Toyota was copying the system in Japan. The thirty years between the end of World War II and the first oil price shock of the mids have long been seen as the golden age of " Fordism " in the international motor vehicle industry. Both contemporary observers and historians have regarded this period as the hey-This article contests the view that " stages of development " determine a uniquely appropriate set of production and marketing strategies for a given industry in a given period. Looking closely at the British automobile industry after World War II, it instead presents the argument that opportunities for significant choices between more or less flexible technologies and organizational forms constitute a continuous feature of modern economic history. Moreover , piecemeal borrowing and selective adaptation have been more common than wholesale imitation of any particular system, and modification and hybridization of imported technologies represent not resistance to " foreign " elements, but creative attempts to fit those elements to local conditions.


For most scholars the key element that distinguished the flexible and efficient Toyota automobile manufacturing system from the inflexible and inefficient mass production systems in Detroit could be found in the tight coupling between part manufacturing and final assembly. And the linchpin of this tight coupling was the just-in-time inventory systems that brought these parts to the assemblers without either production interruption of expensive stock piles. We demonstrate that these features of Toyotaism were also central features to the Detroit production culture before World War II, and that they conferred the same flexibility and efficiency on the pre-World War II automobile industry.

Focus of attention has been paid to influences on the "Pillars of Sustainability", described by Professor Nicholas Ashford, that encompass sustainable development: Environment, Economy, and Employment. Attention is also paid to emergent complex system behavior and associated risks and opportunities. Conclusions and Recommendations are focused on systemic views of the challenges posed by automotive industry activity on the nations studied and policy recommendations on how to possibly both capture economic benefit, but also further sustainable development efforts. Suggested future research topics associated with this thesis would encompass the analysis of different industries, entrepreneurial enterprises, industrial policies, technologies and policies, or the development of associated System Dynamics models.
